Piazza del Popolo

A suggestive view from the Pincian Hill. This square was designed by Giuseppe Valadier, he made "Piazza del Popolo" one of the largest squares in Rome. Piazza del Popolo is one of the most characteristic areas of Neoclassical Rome. In the centre stands the city's second obelisk This obelisk dates 1200 BC and was originally erected by the Egyptian pharaoh Rameses in Heliopolis. Emperor Augustus brought it to Rome and re-rected it in Circus Maximus. Under pope Sixtus V it was moved here.
