Arch of Septimius Severus

The triumphal Arch of Septimius Severus was erected in 203 AD in memory of the glorious victories of the Mesopotamian campaigns, illustrated in the reliefs. The arch is about 20 meters high and 25 meters wide.

The Emperor Septimius Severus (193-211 A.D.)
Septimius Severus restored stability to the Roman empire after the tumultuous reign of the emperor Commodus and the civil wars that erupted in the wake of Commodus' murder.

Geta and Caracalla.
This arch was erected in honor of Septimius Severus and his sons, Caracalla and Geta but the name of Geta was obliterated after Caracalla had him murdered so as to be the emperor successor. Geta's memory was condemned, his name removed from inscriptions, his face removed from sculptures and paintings.
